Priority Pow-Wow

Everybody who is familiar with the intimate details of the Chris Brown/Rihanna brouhaha, please raise your hand right now?

Now, those of you who know as much about the collapse of that relationship as you do about President Obama's stimulus package, please raise your other hand.

Just so y'all know, I only have one hand up.

As the homie from Raw Dawg Buffalo website has pointed out on many occasions, I'm probably not the only person with one hand up.

I would be lying if I said I've spent the same amount of time discussing exactly where all that money is going, as I've spent discussing where Chris Brown's punches went. I've been involved in multiple arguments/discussions about domestic violence and this whole ordeal, and I haven't had one substantive discussion about how the stimulus will affect me.

Am I a loser?

Honestly, the Chris Brown stuff was more interesting to me. And while I won't say it's more important than the stimulus package, it's not the mindless drivel that some folks have said it is. After all, domestic violence is a real and serious issue, and we need to discuss the proper responses to violence if we as a society have any hope of seeing the next generation use them.

But, I still feel bad. I should be breaking down that stimulus package and judging Obama's performance. I need to know how this is going to help reverse the recession and put Americans to work. This is important for my present and future, Chris Brown is going to be all right.

But, I'll probably check Bossip before I read the New York Times tomorrow.

I'm weak.

Neither hand is raised :-)

Don't feel bad, nobody in congress read the stimulus bill before they signed it either :-)

The only place I've even heard of the CB thing is here. I don't even know who he is, some kind of musician or singer I gather. All I know about the stimulus is it's expensive, congressional support for it is almost exclusively based on party affiliation, and that now the Republicans are suddenly against spending again. The past 8 years? Amnesia. As far as they're concerned, Clinton was president right before `big homey'.

Don't feel bad ... I'm supposed to be politically engaged as well (a fellow reporter) and I could careless about the stimulus bill so long as it does something positive for the economy.

But I want to know what Chris Brown, Rihanna and A-Rod's next moves are. Not Brett Farve though. ESPN has spent the last 15 years on it's proverbial knees in front of him.

My issue with staying abreast of the stimulus package process, is the whack commentary options--CNN, MSNBC, and FNC. It's the same crap all day long. At least with the Rihanna thing there are twists and turns. The bill was written, once you comb through it and show that it had 300 million worth of condoms in it, there really aren't any more smoking guns.

Well, you kept mentioning the stimulus package at a couple sites and you made me think. I'm woefully uninformed about the nuts and bolts of the package, and honestly, that ain't good.

But, for some reason, this Chris Brown thing captured my interest more. Not because it involved celebrities, but because of the larger issues it raised about male/female interactions. Several things I've been thinking about for years have been discussed as part of this whole fiasco.

The deadly mistake you are making is giving credence to those networks by even acknowledging their existence.

Pure, complete, useless, mind-corrupting nonsense. How else do you fill 24 hours of programming?

The only news somewhat worth watching is the newshour on PBS, it's at least devoid of any mentions of celebrity sagas and it at least _seems_ to be independent, to the extent that President Bush was even willing to do interviews with Jim Lehrer. Of course the right wingers still accuse PBS as being part of the librulll media because they didn't fawn over him, but still.

The only talking heads they have on are David Brooks and Mark Shiels every Friday or so, but those chaps seem to be somewhat well informed and reasonable.

The thing about the stimulus package is that it's hundreds of billions of dollars and probably hundred of pages worth of stuff. I'm kind of waiting for media people/analysts/etc. with more interest and distillation skills to break it down sufficiently for me to wrap my brain around it.

Chris Brown and Rihanna, on the other, hand, while it's still a complex and thorny thing, are more accessible, as are the details...both the factual and fictitious ones...as well as the massive amounts of gray-area info.

I don't check out the stuff between Chris and Rihanna. I haven't posted on it. Not to make excuses, but I can see why some people wouldn't want to check out the stimulus package. It is so broad and deals with so much money that I feel that I need to have it broken down to my state, my city, my county. Then maybe I could get a better idea of how it is going to help me, my family, and friends. But I'm only seeing an outline with no meat on the bones.

So they made a handy-dandy little website on the stimulus plan that you can get to from whitehouse.gov. (I think it's called relief.gov) and from there you cna see exactly what your state, congressional district and city will be getting in terms of $$$ and estimated jobs.

You can also read the full text of the bill, you know, if you're having trouble sleeping.
